Sejahtera Campus | Division of Industry & Community Network

Keberkesanan Larangan Plastik Sekali Guna

August 14, 2024, the Kampus Sejahtera, Division of Industry and Community Network (BJIM) conducted a comprehensive survey of cafeteria operators at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to assess their awareness and practices related to sustainability. This activity was carried out with the support of the sustainability squad, consisting of nine students and three accompanying officers, to evaluate sustainability initiatives at USM.

Through this survey, important data was collected to identify strengths and weaknesses in the implementation of sustainable practices in USM cafeterias. This data will be used to formulate more effective improvement strategies to ensure broader engagement in sustainability practices across the campus.

This initiative also received moral support from Professor Emeritus Dato’ Seri Dr. Md Salleh Yaapar, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs and Development (1998–2000), who was seen bringing his own food container and avoiding plastic use when purchasing food at Bakti Cafeteria. His actions highlighted the importance of individual contributions in supporting sustainability initiatives.

The survey not only evaluated the effectiveness of the single-use plastic ban but also aimed to plan improvement measures that could further enhance sustainability practices at USM, towards achieving more comprehensive and holistic campus sustainability goals.

Additionally, a second round of monitoring was conducted on September 3, 2024, at several locations including the Kiosk in front of the Mosque, Indah Kembara Cafeteria, Tekun Cafeteria, and Restu Cafeteria. This initiative continued to raise awareness among the local community about the importance of reducing single-use plastic consumption, which harms the environment.

Throughout the program, thorough inspections were carried out to ensure all parties complied with the established ban, while also providing education on eco-friendly alternatives. This effort aligns with the commitment to environmental sustainability and ensuring a greener environment for future generations.
