PENANG: On 14 November 2019, a group of student from Water team under Kampus Sejahtera held a project called DIY Water Filtration programme, with kindergarten kids of Tadika Minden, Universiti Sains Malaysia. The committees of the project acted as facilitators for the kids to teach them how to make a mini water filter to produce a clean water and to imply the sixth Sustainable Development Goal, 'Clean Water and Sanitation'.
The project was led by Nik Raisyha Nurfarain Abdullah, second-year student from School of Physics. The kids were separated into groups of five with one facilitator per group to guide them through the steps to make the mini water filter. The materials needed for the filter were provided by the committees such as dirty water, plastic bottles, cloth, cotton balls, sand and small rocks.
The project encouraged the participations from all kids as they needed to take part in constructing the model and arranging the layers of the filter with the correct materials. The mini water filter was made from used plastic bottle which was cut into half by the facilitators, and the kids were guided through until clean drips of water were produced.
The project came to the realisation to one of the kids who said that the filter works like a water filter he has at home. Unsuccessful attempts to produce the mini water filter happened, however, the kids were not discouraged and attempted to do it again. The teamwork between Tadika Minden kids was great and they gladly supported each other.
After the session of making the mini water filter, participants were given some snacks as a token of appreciation for joining the project. Through this project, it is hoped the committees and participants would realise the importance of having clean water, hence, there would be proactive steps to save water at school and home.
